91. Maintenance of Lighthouses.-All Lighthouses were maintained in a good state of repair. Painting, colourwashing and repairs were carried out in accordance with the recurring programme to all Lighthouses and Aga Lights.

92. Roads and Bridges (Maintenance and Improvements).- The surfaces of approximately 80 miles of roads were generally maintained in a satisfactory condition. The strengthening and improvement of the road surfaces were continued, margins and an additional layer of 4′′-6" macadam tarpainted being laid over the present surface between the 20th and 21st milestones on the Castle Peak Road, and between 31st and 35th milestones on the Lok Ma Chau-Fanling Road. Tarpainting and chipping were carried out from the 10th to 16th milestones, Castle Peak Road, 26th to 27th milestones, Au Tau, and the public portion of the road to the Golf Club, Fanling. An improvement was made to the road alignment near the 5 mile, Taipo Road, and the old spillway on the Ta Ku Ling Patrol path was raised. Minor im- provements were carried out to several bends between the 13 and 15 miles Taipo Road.

93. Maintenance of Telephones.-The lines and instruments were maintained in good order. The removal of telephone poles and wires to new positions at Tsun Wan and Tai Po Stations and Market was effected.

94. Maintenance of Sewers, Nullahs, etc.-The sewers, storm water drains, trained nullahs and concrete channels were cleansed, repaired, and maintained in good condition. Sundry repairs were carried out to channels, and improvements effected to rocky streamcourses.

95. Typhoon and Rainstorm Damages.-Only small repairs to a few buildings were carried out under this vote. Little damage was caused to roads by rainstorms, only a few minor landslides occurring. Minor repairs were carried out to Cheung Chau and Tai O Piers,

96. Maintenance of Water Works at Tsun Wan. This supply was brought into operation on 4th September. The total quantity of water supplied from that date until the end of the year was 2.51 million gallons, equivalent to an average daily consumption of 21,000 gallons. Please see para. 209 of this Report.

97. Maintenance of Water Works at Fanling. The total quantity of water supplied during the year was 8.84 million gallons, compared with 7.68 last year, equivalent to an average daily consumption of 24,000 gallons.

98. Maintenance of Water Works at Tai Po.-The total quantity of water supplied during the year was 22.07 million gallons compared with 23.40 last year, equivalent to an average daily consumption of 61,000 gallons.

100. Maintenance of Praya Walls and Piers.-All piers were maintained in a satisfactory condition. Extensive repairs were carried out to Castle Peak, Tai O and Tsun Wan piers, and minor repairs were effected to the following:-Cheung Chau Pier, Lok Ma Chau Beacons and Measured Mile Marks at Ngan Chau and Putoi Islands,
